ICYMI: Tom Ford Is Making Animal Prints Cool Again

Ready or not, animal prints have made an unlikely comeback. A few years ago, the uniquely patterned prints may have been regarded as the tackiest pieces on the planet. But at this year’s New York Fashion Week, Tom Ford proves that the exotic trend will never really go out of style. Sequins, neon colors and mixed prints were the highlight of the LA-based designer’s collection.
With glitzy, vulgar statement pieces that read “P****y Power” Ford gives the perfect balance of sexy and sophistication. Several models strutted heels and handbags that carry the message. In some cases, Ford even added fishnet stockings to the mix.
Ford revealed his women’s collection last Thursday under dramatic lighting inside the Park Avenue Armory. Regardless of the star-status of this year’s model lineup, the retro-futuristic themed show caught the attention of many while reinforcing the designer’s cool factor.
“The 80s are back!” Elizabeth Banks exclaimed as she waited backstage at the show, Vanity Fair reports. Taking the audience back in time with structured shoulders and colored stockings, he anticipated a mood that was well tailored.
“I love a show that feels cohesive,” said Banks. “I have no idea what to expect, that’s kind of what I love about being here. I really don’t know what has inspired [Ford] this season, and whatever it is, he’s made it incredible.”
Two words sum up the collection: bold and disruptive -- but in an awesomely absurd way. Although headbands and glittery animal prints are a combo reserved for the experts, Ford remains one of the few designers that have the ability to deliver and execute a fun show.
